The Truth on Hail Damage and Insurance

Even if you’ve had an inspection, there are a lot of unqualified roofers at assessing hail damage. On advice of these contractors many unsuspecting homeowners have filed claims for hail damage and the contractor was unable to adequately document and prove damage that exists. A homeowner only has 2 opportunities to get their damage approved. Stio knows how to work with your insurance company to document and prove your damage.

Things to Know about the Insurance Claim Process

  • The first thing you should do if you suspect your home has sustained hail or storm damage is call Stio Roofing and Construction. We will provide a free inspection of your home to see if there is enough damage to warrant filing a claim with your insurance company. The most effective way for a qualified roofing contractor to assess hail and storm damage to your home is to physically inspect your house.

Only after a through inspection of your home will Stio suggest you call and file a claim, providing there is documentable damage.

Call Stio Roofing and Construction and we’ll conduct a free damage inspection of the damage to your home. We are the experts in handling the insurance process and the industry standard of information that must be presented to your insurance adjuster to have legitimate claims accepted.

  1. Typically, if a tree has fallen on your home during a storm, even if from a neighboring yard, your insurance will cover the damage and the cutting and removal of fallen trees. (Likewise, if a tree from your yard falls on a neighboring house during a storm, your neighbor’s insurance should cover the cost of the damage and tree removal.)
  2. Next, you should secure and protect your home from further damage and theft by covering broken windows and damaged rooftops. If desired, Stio Roofing and Construction can provide temporary roof repair to protect your home from the elements.
  3. If the damage to your home requires temporary repairs, be sure to keep receipts of all repair materials and/or services you purchase so your insurance adjuster can review them and reimburse you for expenses covered by your policy.
  4. If any of your personal property has been damaged, you should retain damaged property for inspection purposes or for the insurance company to determine cause of loss.
  5. Make a detailed list of all damaged items and submit it to your agent as soon as possible to speed the processing of your claim. The list should include complete descriptions of each item, brand names, model numbers, serial numbers, age of item, place of purchase, purchase price, and current value.
  6. After you have reported your claim, a claim representative/adjuster will contact you within a few days to schedule an inspection of your house. Keep in mind that claim representatives generally visit the most severely damaged homes first. If there is extensive damage in your area, it may take time for your adjuster to contact you.
  7. Once your claim representative contacts you to schedule a date for a damage inspection, call Stio Roofing and Construction and we will send one of our hail and storm damage experts to work alongside the adjuster. Together we will assess the damage, determine work and materials needed for repair, and prepare a mutually agreed upon estimate for the products and services needed. Insurance companies recommend selecting contractors that have operated in the area for several years, are experienced in repair work and not just new construction, and are bonded and insured. Stio Roofing and Construction meets all these criteria.
  8. State law allows the homeowner to select the contractor of their choice. You have the right by law to have your contractor meet with your insurance adjuster. Do not allow your insurance adjuster to convince you otherwise as this is not in your best interest.
  9. After the damage to your home has been established, you will receive an initial payment from the insurance company for the actual cash value of your damaged building(s), allowing for depreciation or market value considerations. You should expect to pay the contractor up to half of the contract balance at this time.
  10. Stio Roofing and Construction will work with you to finalize the scope and details of the claim and to select materials. Once this is done, we schedule the work to begin as soon as possible.
  11. Stio Roofing and Construction will order construction materials based on the work estimate agreed upon. This material will be delivered to your home. Then we inspect the shipment and materials for quantity, quality, and color.
  12. When the renovation is finished and the site cleaned up, we inspect the completed project to verify that you are 100% satisfied with the work.
  13. After you pay the remainder of the project invoice, be sure to ask for and receive all of your warranty papers and waiver of lien affidavits. This will limit your liabilities.
  14. You may be entitled to additional payments once repairs are completed if your policy has replacement cost provisions. Some repairs may not be covered unless you have purchased a specific endorsement. The cost of building code upgrades is one example.

The actual cash value of your personal property will be paid as soon as it is established. Some policies allow for additional payments when items are replaced (your policy and state law govern timing and amounts).
